The Trial
The clock is ticking for Michael Skakel and the Moxley family... on January 19, 2000, Michael Skakel was arrested for the murder of 15 year old Martha Moxley. He surrendered himself to the authorities in Greenwich, CT where he was booked and released on $500,000.00 bond. During his February arraignment in Stamford, CT, Skakel approached Dorthy Moxley, the victim's mother, and told her that "I feel your pain but you've got the wrong guy". Mrs Moxley does not believe the police have arrested the wrong person. She is anxiously awaiting justice in this 25 year old case.
A reasonable cause hearing is scheduled for June 20, 2000. At this time it will be determined if the state has enough evidence to take this to trial. If so, motions will be heard if the case will remain in juvenile court or be moved over to Superior court. State officials are confident that they will be successful in their bid to have this case moved over to adult court.
If convicted, Michael Skakel could receive a sentence of up to 60 years imprisonment.
UPDATE On January 30, 2001 Judge Maureen Dennis ruled this case would be sent to adult court. The Moxley murder trail is expected to begin within months. At this time, Skakel is still free on bond.
After learning of the Judges decision Dorthy Moxley was quoted as saying
"I'm just as
pleased as I can be, it's a big step in the right direction because justice is what I
want, and I do believe we have the right guy."
